Danny Finnegan, starts out like most twelve-year-olds. He does not particularly like homework. He is hungry all the time. He thinks adult explanations are vague on purpose. (He is correct.) Life is normal enough until it is not.

This book deals with grief, but in a way that feels human and grounded. It does not rush him. It does not scold him for feeling things. It simply goes with him. Grief is not a villain here. It is something Danny carries, learns from, and slowly grows around.
Enter Grundle, Danny’s traveling companion and possibly the strangest guide you could hope for. Is he wise? Yes. Is he withholding important information? Also, yes. Is he doing his best? Surprisingly, also yes. Their conversations range from helpful to confusing to emotionally meaningful in a blink, which feels very accurate to real life mentorship if we are being honest.
During their journey, Danny begins to uncover the ancient magic of the four elements. Water. Air. Fire. Earth. Each one has something to teach him. None of them come with instructions. He is learning by doing, which is occasionally heroic and occasionally chaotic. Again, accurate.
Awakening is a story about finding courage in messy moments. About learning who you are when everything you knew has changed. About choosing to keep moving even when you are tired, scared, or feel like yelling into the forest for a minute. (Danny does this. It helps.)
This book is for anyone who has ever had life hit unexpectedly hard and still found a way forward. It is full of wonder, heart, and just enough humor to keep you breathing through the heavy parts.
